The UCLA Pediatric Kidney Program is one of the most active and successful programs of its kind in the United States. The program has been in existence since 1980, and nearly 500 children, aged one to 21, have received kidney transplants. Since the program was initiated, our transplant success rate has steadily improved, so that today the UCLA Pediatric Kidney Program has one of the highest cadaveric kidney transplantation success rates in the world.

The professionals on the team have long been engaged in numerous studies to optimize kidney transplant outcome in children. This work has led to a series of immuno-suppressive protocols, innovative surgical procedures, and drug regimens designed to address the unique needs of children with end-stage renal disease.

UCLA offers a full spectrum of care to children with end-stage renal disease including in-center and home hemodialysis. The professionals at UCLA are among the world's leaders in developing new advances in home dialysis care designed uniquely for children.

The Pediatric Kidney Transplant Team includes specialists in:

  • Pediatric nephrology

  • Urologic surgery

  • Psychiatry and psychology

  • Pediatric and home dialysis

  • Medical ethics

  • Nutrition

  • Social work

  • Specialized nursing

  • Transplant coordination

  • Child life

  • Education

  • Specialized pharmacy

This team of specialists is supplemented by experienced pediatric intensivists, consultants in pathology, interventional radiology, pulmonary and cardiac medicine, immunology and infectious diseases, as well as the full services of the faculty and staff of UCLA Children's Hospital. The team assumes responsibility for your child's primary care during hospitalization for the transplant and immediate after-care, and remains an ongoing resource for transplant patients and their primary care physicians.
