The Pediatric Heart Transplant Program was started in 1984. The surgical team led by Dr. Hillel Laks has performed over 100 pediatric heart transplants. Dr. Laks also directs the Adult Heart Transplant Program and is internationally renowned as an adult and pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon. Drawing from the experience of more than 800 adult transplants, the program provides thorough evaluation services, extends the limited donor pool through long-distance organ recoveries, affords exceptional surgical skills to tailor the operation to meet the needs of complex congenital heart defects and has access to the most recently developed medications to prevent rejection of the donor heart. In collaboration with the Pediatric Cardiologists, led by Dr. Juan Alejos, the surgeons and a multi-disciplinary team assures the best treatment is provided for the child undergoing heart transplantation.
